Broadband based Internet VPNs begin at £50 per month with Global MPLS, VPLS and SD-WAN Ethernet connectivity starting at approx £300 through to well over £1000 per month in certain regions. First, the pros of SD WAN. Public cloud adoption is growing fast, SD-WAN is well aligned to meet the demands of global Internet usage. SDN based technology is providing granular application treatment including local QoS, security and statistics. The marketing buzz suggests the software-based networking is cost effective compared to MPLS. If the price is your main concern then reducing networking spend is achievable but be wary of service providers leading from this angle. Procure everything in one box from network appliance to stateful packet inspection security, DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service), remote access, VPN and content filtering. Connectivity agnostic, a single device to terminate Internet and Private connections from layer 3 MPLS and layer 2 VPLS networks.

When it comes to designing and building a modern wide area network (WAN) architecture, several new and traditional technologies are available to build the most appropriate and cost-effective solution for your organisation. Today, SD WAN often serves as a focal point of connectivity, but other traditional technologies like MPLS, VPLS, and private circuits still hold value and can provide services that Internet-only SD WAN cannot, such as true quality of service (QoS) and multicast. Continuous improvements in wireless technology such as 5G enable more flexible connectivity options, and potentially quicker start-up times as you might no longer need to rely on wireline services, depending on your location circumstances.

SHDS (Short Haul Data Services) are distant dependent. On the flip side, a Virtual Leased Line is available as point to point, multipoint or any to any on a Global basis. Short Haul Data Service - If you have sites that are within a relatively close geographic range (up to 25 – 35 kilometres), and you have higher bandwidth or privacy requirements, SHDS should be a primary consideration. SHDS typically uses dedicated fibre to reach each of your attached sites, and the bandwidth is designated solely to you.
